The Onalaska Land Project mission is to communally share the land – not abiding by capitalism’s
structures of property and ownership – and to build a healing space for retreat, gathering, and
therapy.
Outgrowing Modernity braids the values and ethics the Onalaska Land Project seeks to practice
and live into, including anti-capitalism, dreaming beyond colonialism and gift economy.
Reading, exploring the invitations in the book and engaging in our own relational and artistic
experiments together we hope to build skills and awareness around how to breathe life into
these values and ethos. We also seek to learn ways to remain in relationship in turbulent times
and remain resourced in our current context of rapidly unfolding crises, rising authoritarianism
and ecological collapse.

What is the cost?
This year long exploration of Outgrowing Modernity lives in the intersection of gift economy
and the realities of capitalism. This means we gladly accept gifts of all kinds including financial

What is the format of the group discussions?
The discussion will be held quarterly and will be offered online.
Each discussion will have a general flow of gathering, being in presence together, reflection time, movement of some, artistic time and engagement in the prompts and invitations from the book.

Do I have to attend all the group discussions?
While we understand that life happens and no one is required (i.e. you will not be asked to
leave the group) to make all four discussions, all participants are strongly encouraged to attend
all four group discussion sessions.

Are you going to record the discussions and make the recording available?
Yes. We will record the group discussions and make them available to participants. We also
plan to share snippets of the recording on our Buy Me a Coffee and other sites.

Do I need to prepare for the discussions?
The hosts will send out prompts and questions a few weeks before we gather. Nothing is
required other than your presence.

What and where is the salon?
What and where is the salon
Salons will be held at our land project in Onalaska, Washington 1.5 hours north of Portland,
Oregon and 2 hours south of Seattle, Washington. You are invited to come for the day to enjoy
the land and attend the salon. You are also invited to stay overnight in the main house, in our
hexayurt in the Maple 17 Meadow, camp anywhere on the 17 acres, or camp at the Ike Kinswa
state camp site by Mayfield Lake. Food and beverages will be simple and we will check in about
food allergies and restrictions. Participants are encouraged to bring anything they feel moved
to share—food, beverages art, books, objects, songs. There will be a theme/prompt/question
for each salon. The vibe is informal—a time to deepen with one another and engage with the
prompt while we enjoy food, beverages and the wonderful company of each other and our
other than human kin in the area.

What if I can’t make it to the salon?
We strongly encourage participants to attend the salons as they are a critical part of our
exploration together.

Can people join throughout the year?
While we value the intention of allowing folks to join us midstream, we believe the intention of
our process will be served by hosting a closed group. People will have until the day before our
first discussion group together to register.

Do I have to read Vanessa Machado de Oliveria’s first book?
While we recommend reading reading Hospicing Modernity: Facing Humanity's Wrongs and the Implications for Social Activism, it is not required.

I am committed to learning and uncovering the defenses, fears, and barriers that prevent me
from fully living within the collective web of life. I am both humbled and disturbed by the ways
in which supremacy, white nationalism, colonialism, racialized capitalism, and fascism have
numbed me—distracting me, instilling fear, and luring me into illusions of false safety and
security. I look forward to reconnecting with the ecosystems this project invites me to engage
with.

Cristien Storm
I am excited to meet you and engage in this experiment and exploration of liberatory possibility
together. I am a writer, poet and politicized healer striving to live into relationships of all kinds,
with human and other than human kin, that can hold the tensions and contradictions of our
present colonial contexts while attempting to imagine beyond power-over systems.

Liz Goodwin
One of my most favorite activities is to join other liberation-minded humans in our own created
journeys of awakening our minds and hearts to the deeper truths of life’s possibilities around
love, interconnectedness, freedom and joy. Even better if there is a book involved! My heart
and soul are wrapped up in the question of how to subvert the dominant structures that persist
in ever more terrifying ways and I truly believe we can create worlds of mutual relationship,
infrastructures of care, and new ways of seeing and being outside of white supremacist,
colonial, scarcity based frames. I’m a mom of two wild lovelies, two pitties, and 6 chickens,
grateful founder of Generative Healing Arts, and very grateful friend of Anne and Cristien.
